My Background

Initially I worked as a Human Factors Engineer, involved in the analysis and design of equipment and training for new military systems.  This gave me a thorough understanding of people’s physical and mental capabilities and how they could best be supported in performing as required through the provision of appropriate task equipment, information, and training.

More recently I have worked on understanding and changing ‘softer’ organisational and cultural aspects of work to improve performance, in addition to ensuring that tasks are physically and mentally achievable by the people being asked to perform them.

How I work with organisations

I generally work with senior managers who wish to address an organisational issue that relates to people and their behaviour.  What I do varies, depending on the organisation, individual and issues I am working with.

Generally the work involves improving peoples’ understanding of:

  1. what they want to achieve, and how they want people in the organisation to behave in relation to achieving it

  2. how well people are informed, enabled and motivated to perform as wanted

  3. how performance could possibly be further improved by altering the physical, social or organisational characteristics of the work environments

Ways in which I do this include:

  1. challenging their thinking as to the current situation in their organisation

  2. providing factual information relating to current behaviours, thinking and feelings with which they can make decisions

  3. assisting them identify ways in which they can act to improve performance

  4. developing tools they can use to implement change

  5. evaluating the impact of the changes they have made
